Randell Brewer Obituary

Laurel County - Surrounded by his loving family, Randell Brewer made the journey to his Heavenly home on June 15, 2025 where he was reunited with his beloved wife Viola Benge Brewer.

He was born on January 10, 1934 in Laurel County on the family farm in the Laurel River Community. This homeplace always remained dear to his heart. Although at some point ownership changed, later in his life he was excited to purchase the family homeplace and the farm, and was the owner at the time of his passing. Randell enjoyed the farm, raising tobacco and cows. In recent years, when he was unable to work, he often drove out to the farm just to enjoy sitting there and admiring his cattle.

Randell began his education at age 4 and began his first job at the same time. As the school janitor, he started the fire every cold morning until he completed the 8th grade. Randell attended Bush High School where he began his basketball career. After graduation he was offered a four-year basketball scholarship to Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. He declined the offer and accepted a two-year scholarship to play basketball for Red Little at Sue Bennett College. This gave him the opportunity to continue working on the family farm.

At the age of 8 years old he saw Viola Benge for the first time at her family's store. They would later fall in love during his time at Sue Bennett College. After graduating from SBC, Randell continued his education at Eastern State College, now known as Eastern Kentucky University.

In 1955, Randell was drafted into the United States Army, spending his service time at Fort Ord in Monterrey, California, Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, and Selfridge Air Force Base near Detroit, Michigan. He married Viola on July 6, 1956. After completing his service, he returned to Eastern State College and obtained his teaching certificate.

Randell was offered a position in Laurel County schools to teach PE and coach basketball. He declined the offer and began his career with Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance. During his career with KFB, Randell received numerous honors and awards for his salesmanship. He also served as a past president of the Laurel County Farm Bureau Board. Randell was an active member in Laurel County civic affairs. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners as well as the Kiwanis Club. He served on the First National Bank board of directors and was chairman of the board until the bank was sold in 2020. Randell was also named a Kentucky Colonel.

Randell also devoted time to his numerous hobbies. He was an avid golfer. In 1972 he purchased the Leonard Conley Farm which eventually was developed by Randell and two other businessmen into Crooked Creek Golf Course, now the Oaks of London. He was also a pilot, achieving his instrument and multi-engine rating pilot's license. Randell was a longtime UK basketball and football ticket holder. He loved UK, win or lose.

The most important characteristic that defined Randell was his faith in God. At the age of 9, he was baptized in Laurel River Baptist Creek. For many years he attended Laurel River Missionary Baptist Church where he served as song leader, Sunday School teacher and was ordained as a deacon. He later moved his membership to First Baptist Church of London where he continued serving as Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and deacon. He served as deacon emeritus, trustee, and treasurer until his health interfered. He and Viola made sure that their lives and their children's lives stayed grounded in the Word of God and faith in Jesus Christ.

In addition to his wife, Randell was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel Williams Brewer and Roy Brewer, and his brother Russell Brewer and sister Helen Napier. Randell is survived by his sister Mildred Hacker of London; daughter Susan Owens and husband Stan Owens, and daughter Myra Jane Brewer, all of London; and his four beloved grandchildren: Dr. Hazelee Vice and husband Dr. Ben Vice, Hannah Owens, Ally Cheuvront and husband Dr. Cameron Cheuvront, and Dr. Randell B.
