Michael Samples Obituary

London, Kentucky - It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael William Samples, a devoted husband, father, veteran, and community leader, who left us on June 16th 2025. Born on September 11, 1960, in Elyria, Ohio, Michael lived a life marked by service, dedication, and unwavering patriotism.

Michael graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1984 with a degree in Political Science, a testament to his commitment to understanding and contributing to the governance of our great nation. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, embarking on a journey that would define much of his life. Michael served valiantly, first becoming active in 1986, where he had the honor of escorting the USS Samuel E. Roberts back to the United States. His service continued as an Air Traffic Controller on the USS San Jacinto in 1989, and he played a crucial role in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm from 1990 to 1991, where he was proud to fire the first Tomahawk missiles of the war. Michael concluded his military service in 1994 as an AIC Instructor, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and dedication.

In 1991, Michael settled in London, Kentucky, where he continued to exemplify the values he held dear. In 1997, he founded Mink's Lawn Service, a venture that reflected his hard work and entrepreneurial spirit. Michael was not only a successful businessman but also a pillar of his community. His passion for service extended beyond his professional endeavors; he was deeply involved with numerous organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America and the Shriners, where he served since 2002. As one of the founding members of London Downtown and a board member of London Code Enforcement, Michael worked tirelessly to improve and uplift his community.

Michael's love for his family was profound. He cherished every moment spent with his loved ones, instilling in them the same values of patriotism, service, and compassion that guided his life. His kindness, generosity, and dedication to those around him left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.

Michael William Samples will be remembered as a man of integrity, a soldier who served his country with honor, and a community leader who cared deeply for the welfare of others. His legacy of patriotism and service will forever inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. Michael was united in marriage to Vicky Darlene Greenwell, who survives him in London. He is also survived by his three children, Jonathon Samples and Katelin Samples, both of London, and Pauline Willis and her husband Curtis of Corbin, Kentucky. Michael was a cherished sibling to David Samples and his wife Tammy, and Katrina Samples. He was a proud grandfather to Hailey Samples, Kali Samples, and Olivia Samples, and a great-grandfather to Avery Samples and amazing uncle to Josh Samples. He leaves behind a host of other family and friends who mourn his passing. He was proceeded in death by his mother, Donna Pack and father, Arnold Samples, and cherished nephew Justin Samples.

The funeral service for Michael William Samples was conducted Friday in the Bowling Funeral Home Chapel with Shawn Allen officiating. Burial followed at the Mill Springs National Cemetery in Nancy with military honors.
