Vestil Lee Benge Vestil Lee Benge, 78, formerly of Laurel County, Ky., passed away Monday, March 7, 2016, at the Wittenberg Village Nursing Center in Crown Point, Ind., following a brief illness. He was born July 8, 1937, in the Marydell community in eastern Laurel County, the son of the late Matt and Martha Minton Benge. Accustomed to farm life, he was the ninth of 10 children and attended Shady Grove School and later Bush High School. Following his attendance at Bush School, where he was a member of the basketball team, he joined the Kentucky National Guard. He subsequently moved to Highland, Ind., attended barber and beautician school, and started a family. He was a successful hair stylist for over 50 years and owned and operated a hair salon in Atlanta, Ga. He moved to North Myrtle Beach, S.C., around 1998, to continue his work as a stylist. He loved the beach and was an avid bass fisherman and shag dancer as well as a Kentucky Wildcat fan. In his formative years he attended Shady Grove Baptist Church. While living in North Myrtle Beach, he attended church at the Pavillion. Due to illness he moved to Crown Point in 2015. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Baxter, George, Matt Jr. and Denver Benge; and four sisters, Elaine Vatterrodt, Jurah Dean Hayre, Lena Jones and Ida Brown. He is survived by a sister, Emma Ring; two children, Monika and Matthew and wife, Ruthie; four grandchildren, Jessica, Leah, Kaylee and Noah, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who mourn his passing. Graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 11, at the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville, Ind. Burial followed at Chapel Lawn.
