Hobert Vernus Owens, 84, passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2016.
He was born on May 6, 1932 in Laurel County, Ky., the son of the late Charles and Priscilla Gray Owens.
He was united in marriage first to Alice Pearl Jones who preceded him in death and second to Nora Lee Evans Howard who survives.
He is also survived by seven children, Keith Owens of Gary, Ind., Kenny Owens of Bluefield, Va., Kevin Owens of Hammond, Ind., Kent Owens of Griffith, Ind., Kirk Owens of Valpraiso, Ind., Kay Joyce of Black Oak, Ind. and Karla Booker of Houston, Texas; a step-sister, Geneva Napier of Somerset, Ky.; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents and first wife he was also preceded in death by his siblings, Mary Caldwell, Mattie Whitehead, Lela Parman, Lillie Powell, Opal Eldridge, Vernie Horne, Lovada Bates and Robert Owens.
He was formerly employed at a steel mill in East Chicago, Ind.; was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of the East Salem United Baptist Church.
Visitation was on Thursday, June 9, at Bowling Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral hour with Kenny Owens and Michael Hampton officiating.
Burial followed in the Walter Evans Cemetery in London.
Military honors were provided by the local DAV.
