Hershel Lee ‘Hurby’ Scalf Hershel Lee “Hurby” Scalf, 66, Laurel County, Ky., passed away Monday, March 14, 2016, at Saint Joseph London. He was born on January 1, 1950, in Clay County, Ky., the son of the late James and Susie Simpson Scalf. He was united in marriage to Barbara Humfleet Scalf, who survives of Lily. Also surviving are four children, Candie Hensley and husband, Jerry, Hershel Scalf and fiancee, Mitzi, Thomas Scalf and Murby Scalf and wife, Kaci, all of Lily; 10 siblings, Edna Robinson of London, Paul Scalf, James E. Scalf, and Doris Curry, all of Huntington, Ind., Flora Hacker of Hillsboro, Mich., Nora Hershey, Lina Abernathy and Patty Bishop, all of Troy, Ohio, Freddie Scalf of Louisville and Edith Jeffrey of Manchester; 12 grandchildren, Trevor, Justin, Kaylee and Travis Scalf, Jalynn Browning, Chase Queen, Catelyn, Jakob and Joshua Kerns, and Matthew, Kaitlin and Kaiya Hensley, plus a host of other friends and relatives to mourn her passing. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Bernice Hoskins and Mary Katherine Scalf and four brothers, Boyd, Billy and Murrel Scalf and Alonzo Simpson. He was a construction worker and heavy equipment operator and a member of Star of Bethlehem Church. Funeral service for Hershel Lee “Hurby” Scalf was conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 17, in the Bowling Funeral Home Chapel with Steve Wilkerson and Jerry Hensley officiating. Burial followed in the McHargue Cemetery at Lily. The received friends at Bowling Funeral Home on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral hour.
